Shredders and GDPR Regulations

In the context of GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), data destruction is a crucial element in ensuring the security of information. According to Article 4, paragraph 2, GDPR does not specify exactly how data should be destroyed. However, it is important that the process makes it impossible to later reconstruct the data.

What does this mean for shredders?
Most manufacturers on the market have adopted the standard that shredders meeting GDPR requirements are those that offer a security level of P-4 or higher. Security levels are classified according to DIN 66399, which determines the degree of document shredding. In short:

  • P-1 to P-3: Low to medium security. Ideal for destroying general documents that do not contain confidential information.
  • P-4: High security, which is the standard for documents containing personal data under GDPR requirements. Documents are shredded into fine particles, making reconstruction significantly more difficult.
  • Levels P-5 to P-7: Very High Security
These levels are used for the destruction of highly confidential documents. The higher the level, the smaller the paper shreds.

Why is P-4 the GDPR Standard?
Level P-4 is considered sufficient because it provides an adequate degree of shredding, making document reconstruction virtually impossible. Shredders with this level cut paper into pieces around 160 mm², which is regarded as secure in terms of personal data protection.

How to Choose the Right Shredder?
When selecting a GDPR-compliant shredder, it is important to consider several key factors:

  • Security Level: Make sure the shredder offers at least a P-4 security level.
  • Capacity and Shredding Speed: Tailor these parameters to the volume of documents you need to shred.
  • Additional Features: Some shredders can destroy other data carriers such as credit cards or CDs, which can be a useful bonus.

Summary
Ensuring compliance with GDPR regulations is a crucial element of personal data management. Choosing the right shredder that meets the P-4 security level or higher is not only a matter of legal compliance but also a responsible approach to data protection. This ensures that our documents are destroyed securely, making it impossible to later reconstruct them.
